“I have come to a frightening conclusion. I am the decisive element in the classroom. It is my personal approach that creates the climate. It is my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher I possess tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or humor, hurt or heal. In all situations it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated, and a child humanized.” Dr Haim G. Ginott.
I look at this quote everyday before I go to work. It is my reminder of exactly why I work with kids what power I possess and what a difference I can make, on that note... Reflection time is a childcare workers best friend. I think that the person who decided that kids need a nap in the middle of the day was genius… ok maybe not but we all need a break, seeing as I am feeling horrid today and have been wanting to sock someone all day… nap time is a necessity.
Childcare is difficult because no matter how horrid your day is how shitty you feel you must leave everything at the door once you walk in. children are delicate creatures and sense any emotion… so I have become a rather good actress… pretending everything is alright when really it is not.
